Episode 139: The Hard Science Behind the Soft Skills with Dr. Chika Oriuwa
In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Chika Oriuwa to explore why the so-called soft skills of leadership, authenticity, vulnerability, curiosity, and compassion aren’t soft at all. Chika brings a unique background in psychiatry, neurobiology, and public leadership, and she shows us the hard science behind how great leadership actually works.
She explains how mirror neurons, cortisol regulation, and the prefrontal cortex all influence the way we lead, connect, and make decisions. We talk about how modeling vulnerability activates trust, how compassion becomes contagious, and how authentic leaders are actually wired to make better choices under pressure.
One of my favorite parts is her concept of the “archeological dig”, a brilliant metaphor for examining our own biases, triggers, and internal wiring. It’s a powerful call to lead from self-awareness and intentionality.
We also get practical. Chika shares micro-habits that help leaders spark curiosity, unlock creativity, and strengthen critical thinking, even in the most stagnant environments. Whether it’s writing a haiku, listening to unfamiliar music, or allowing yourself to daydream, these are small steps that build real leadership muscle.
If you're leading a high-performing team or trying to shift a culture that resists change, this episode gives you tools you can use right away, tools grounded in neuroscience and full of heart. Leadership starts on the inside, and Chika shows us exactly how to begin.
