Healthcare Leadership Excellence

Episode 10: Listening with Compassion and Curiosity with Dr. Donna Smith

Karl Pister Season 1 Episode 10

In this episode, I talk with Dr. Donna Smith, President of Franciscan Medical Group and Senior Vice President of Virginia Mason Franciscan Health. She shares with us some of the best leadership practices she has learned over the years such as spending intentional time to get to know her staff and always listening with compassion and curiosity.

Dr. Smith also tackles the topic of emotions and how medical professionals need to be comfortable with emotions if they want to excel in their careers. As she says, “Healthcare is an emotional business because we are dealing with humans”.

In the latter part of the episode, she discusses how to combat burnout. She then gives profound suggestions such as engaging people in solving problems, setting the foundation for hope in the future, and creating space for acknowledging them.

Dr. Smith is one of the outstanding leaders I have had the privilege to work with. Thank you, Dr. for such an inspiring discussion on excellent and compassionate leadership.
