Karl Pister

Dr. Rob Orman, a renowned expert in handling difficult conversations, joins me once again on the Healthcare Leadership Excellence podcast. He hosts the Stimulus Podcast and sends out phenomenal newsletters. Today, we dive into why people often struggle with conflict.

Dr. Orman explains that our natural response to uncomfortable situations is largely driven by our limbic system, often called the "lizard brain." This part of our brain triggers fight-or-flight responses, making it difficult to stay calm and rational during conflicts. He emphasizes that understanding this biological reaction is the first step toward improving how we handle tough conversations.

During our discussion, Dr. Orman shares practical tips on managing these instinctual responses.  We can approach conflicts more thoughtfully and constructively when these methods are applied.

Dr. Orman also highlights the importance of empathy and active listening in resolving disputes. He believes that by truly listening to the other person's perspective, we can find common ground and foster a more productive dialogue. This approach not only defuses tension but also leads to more meaningful and effective communication.
